Nalanda University was an ancient center of higher learning, a large Buddhist monastery located in the ancient kingdom of Magadha, in present-day Bihar state, India. The site is located about 95 kilometers (59 mi) southeast of Patna, near the city of Bihar Sharif. Nalanda was an important center of learning from the 5th century and flourished from the reign of King Śakrāditya (title unknown, possibly King Kumara Gupta I or Kumara Gupta II) until the late 12th century (1197) ). Then Nalanda was completely destroyed. Today, Nalanda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016.
